The HeNe laser source operates at a wavelength of 632nm. The red measurement beam is visible to the naked eye and can be positioned without the need for a targeting laser. With the comparatively short wavelength, the laser beam can be focused to a very small spot diameter. While a HeNe laser will remain lit and produce a beam with a variation in tube current of 10 percent or more, for some applications, a true constant current is required for optimum results. The reason is that any variation in tube current also results in a variation in output power as well a optical frequency.
