RVSM is the reduction of vertical separation between aircraft at certain higher altitudes. RVSM is applied only between aircraft that meet stringent altimeter and auto-pilot performance requirements. The introduction of RVSM in WATRS airspace will save operators fuel and time and will enhance airspace capacity.
For RVSM, the autopilot (and altimeter) has to be operable, certified for maintaining a tight altitude tolerance, and maintained in an approved RVSM maintenance schedule. FAA Part 91, appendix G, Section 2. In the event the autopilot fails at RVSM altitudes, the pilot shall contact ATC and state "Unable RVSM Due Equipment".
An operator annotates the equipment block of the FAA or International Designated RVSM airspace allows authorized aircraft to operate at 1000 foot separation. Operations at these higher altitudes for many jet aircraft is critical for Mar 1, 2001 A required pressure-altitude accuracy of ±160 ft (±49 m) has been achieved. When radar is employed in the separation of aircraft at the same altitude, a minimum of 3 Operators are required to participate in the RVSM altitude- keeping Since its start, the RVSM concept has been validated; the altitude keeping performance of the aircraft monitored by the Height Monitoring Units (HMU) of Gander Sep 6, 2018 A key part of flying the RVSM is the reduction of the standard vertical separation required between aircraft flying between FL290 and FL410. Reduced vertical separation minima or minimum (RVSM) is the reduction of the of the pressure altimeter (used to determine altitude) decreases with height. RVSM airspace is any airspace or route between flight level (FL) 290 and FL 410 inclusive where aircraft are separated vertically by 1,000 feet.
What is RVSM? RVSM reduces the vertical separation of aircraft from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet when they're flying at altitudes from FL290 (29,000 feet) to FL410 (41,000 feet). What is RVSM? RVSM reduces the vertical separation of aircraft from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet when they're flying at altitudes from FL290 (29,000 feet) to FL410 (41,000 feet). So why is this happening? It significantly increases (in theory, it nearly doubles) the number of airplanes that can fly in a defined area of airspace.
It allows aircraft to safely fly more optimum profiles, gain fuel savings and increase airspace capacity. Se hela listan på skybrary.aero

That’s because the higher altitudes preferred by the airliners is also coveted by the GA community as prime RVSM airspace. Before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, those higher, more-fuel-efficient altitudes in RVSM airspace always had far more demand than capacity.
With RVSM it now says that IFR altitudes are odd to the east and even to the west all the way to FL410 which gives a 1000' separation between IFR AC. The actual altitude (not the pressure altitude flown) is not observable by both the pilots and ATC so the RVSM Monitoring test samples the aircraft performance using GPS height and altitude and Cruising Levels Applicable in RVSM Airspace. The RVSM cruising levels to be observed when required are as follows: In areas where, on the basis of regional air navigation agreements and in accordance with conditions specified therein, a Vertical Separation Minimum (VSM) of 300m (1000ft) is applied between FL290 and FL410 inclusive, except when on the basis of regional air navigation agreements With air travel and airspace usage demand increasing each year, the airspace rules are in transition to keep pace. Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM) was implemented in our airspace to… Altitudes: Pilots flying through RVSM airspace continue using the Odd-East / West-Even rule up to FL410, after which the airspace becomes CVSM. We have a non RVSM King Air B200. Looking at the various STC options for RVSM upgrades the same question keeps popping up: even if we upgrade to RVSM capability, will ATC clear us to those altitudes, given that we will be so much slower than the other jet traffic found there.
